Two powerful little words: So what!

In my day-to-day work, today’s topic comes up more than any other.
We sit through endless presentations. Slick slides, smart data, the occasional inspiring story, and yet we walk away thinking: So what? Nothing changes. No decisions. No action. No movement. No feeling.
That’s a problem.
I’ve said this many times before: most presenters stop at what. What they did. What the results were. But the real magic lives in So what? and Now what?
So what? is where relevance lives. It’s where meaning and value collide. It’s where your audience leans in, not because you’re interesting, but because it matters to them.
Now what? is where momentum begins. This is your call to action. This is where insight becomes impact. This is where you stop presenting and start leading.
Great communicators don’t just inform, they transform. They move people from awareness to action. From “That’s interesting” to “We need to do something about this.”
So… now what? Read on and take action.
Be Remarkable (Presentations)
99% of presentations drown in slides. Too much data. Too many points. Not enough purpose.
The real problem? We don’t know what to leave out and we’re not 100% clear on what we want the audience to do.
That’s where the So what? test changes everything.
Next time, make every slide, every sentence, every statistic answer one simple question: So what? Do that, and you’ll quickly strip away the noise and keep only what matters.
Let the brutal editor in you come out to play.
Great presenters don’t show everything they know. They show only what the audience needs to know in order to act.
Be Remarkable (Meetings)
Here’s a challenge for your next meeting.
Run everything through two questions: So what? and Now what?
So what? forces clarity. It asks: Why does this matter? What’s the impact? What’s the decision? Until that’s clear, you’re just exchanging information, not making progress.
Now what? creates movement. It turns ideas into actions, discussion into ownership, and meetings into momentum. It answers one critical question: Who will do what, by when?
Without So what? and Now what?, meetings become calendars filled with noise. With them, meetings become catalysts for decisions, direction, and accountability.
Be Remarkable (In an Interview)
In interviews, most people list experiences, responsibilities, and achievements and stop at what they did.
The standout candidates go further.
They answer So what? What changed because of what I did? Why does it matter? And they answer Now what? How does this experience make me valuable to you - right here, right now?
That’s not storytelling. That’s relevance.
And in interviews, relevance wins.
Final Thought
Anyone can share information.
Great communicators translate it into meaning.
Great leaders turn it into action.
The remarkable ones?
They never leave their audience wondering So what?
And they never leave without a clear Now what?
